DAVIS, Calif. - Freshman designated hitter Adrienne Anderson went 2-for-4 with two RBI in her first career start and Jennifer Davis posted her third shutout of the season as UC Santa Barbara defeated UC Davis 8-0 Sunday to take the series 2-1. With the win, the Gauchos improved to 18-14 overall (2-4 Big West) on the year.
UCSB took advantage of six unearned runs and outhit the Aggies, 9-3, on their way to winning the weekend series. UC Davis falls to 13-25 overall.
The score remained 1-0 into the fourth when the Gauchos scored two unearned runs. With two outs, junior shortstop Brittany Putich had a two-run double to drive home runners from second and third to extend the lead to 3-0.
In the fifth, two errors by the Aggies opened the door for an additional four runs. Sophomore catcher Ericka Hansen had a one-out triple to drive in the Gauchos' fourth run. Later in the inning with two outs, Anderson's two-run double upped the margin to 7-0.
Santa Barbara added an eighth run in the seventh for the 8-0 final.
Davis limited the Aggie hitters to just three singles en route to her 12th victory of the season. She struck out seven and walked two and improved to 12-11.
Lindsay Tognetti started for the Aggies with six of the seven runs she allowed ending up unearned. She gave up eight hits and struck out four in four and two-thirds innings. Stacey Benzing pitched two and a third innings in relief and allowed one run on one hit with four strikeouts.
The Gauchos resume Big West play next weekend with they travel to Cal State Northridge for a three series beginning Saturday, April 22 with a 12:00 p.m. doubleheader. The Gauchos and Matadors will play a single game Sunday at noon.
