UCSB vs. Denver
at Campus Pool
Diving at 11:30 a.m.
Swimming at 12 p.m.
The UC Santa Barbara swimming and diving teams will continue their three week home stand on Friday as they host Denver in a dual meet. The diving events will begin at 11:30 a.m. and the swimming will get underway at noon at Campus Pool. Admission, as always, is free.
• The Men Dive In
The Gaucho men will open their 2011-12 campaign this weekend. UCSB did not graduate any seniors last year and consequently, returns a bevy of extremely talented swimmers. Leading the pack is 2011 NCAA Championship qualifier Chris Peterson. Fellow seniors Kevin Ferguson, Tim Freeman, Ryan Garcia, Kevin Kuhn, Evan Simoni and Garrett Thompson join him on the roster. In all, the Gauchos will have 17 returners and 15 newcomers on the team this year, including three divers.
• Yamauchi Named Mountain Pacific Sports Federation Athlete of the Week
Sophomore Sophia Yamauchi earned MPSF Athlete of the Week honors following a standout meet against UCLA and Oregon State last Saturday. She won the 100 breast (1:03.51), 200 breast (2:16.63) and 200 individual medley (2:02.69). Yamauchi's wins helped lead the Gauchos past Oregon State and helped UCSB post its most individual wins (8) over UCLA in program history. She is now ranked in the top-20 in Division I in each of the events: fifth in the 200 IM, 13th in the 200 breast, and 18th in the 100 breast.
• On The Horizon
UCSB will remain home next week to host a dual on Friday, Nov. 4 against UC San Diego at 1 p.m. A few Gaucho divers will begin competition at the two-day USC Diving Invitational in Los Angeles that same day.
