Gauchos Cruise to Pair of Victories Over Visiting Rebels

SANTA BARBARA, Calif. – The UCSB swimming and diving teams defeated UNLV on Saturday in a dual at Campus Pool. The Gaucho women took down the visiting Rebels, 166-134, while the men posted a 134-122 victory.

UCSB won a total of 17 events with five Gauchos capturing multiple individual event titles.

The meet opened with both UCSB 'A' relays sweeping the 200 medley relay. The women's team of Allie Knight, Sophia Yamauchi, Andrea Ward and Kendall Neely touched in 1:45.17. On the men's side, Chris Peterson's come from behind anchor leg led himself, Kevin Ferguson, Tyler Jean and Wade Allen to first place in 1:32.01.

Andrew Barmann captured the first of his two individual wins in the 1000 freestyle with a finish in 9:31.99. He later won the 500 free in 4:37.20.

Andrea Ward followed with a victory in the 200 free, touching the wall in 1:53.05. Her second individual win was in the 100 butterfly, which she finished in 55.47 seconds.

Allie Knight also doubled up on individual wins, capturing first in the 100 back (57.47) and the 200 back (2:03.53). Sophia Yamauchi, meanwhile, took first in the 100 breaststroke (1:04.17) and then the 200 individual medley (2:05.25).

Chris Peterson rounded out the double event winners as he dominated the sprint freestyle races with a first place in the 50 (20.42) and 100 (44.80) free.

In the diving competition, Caila Baltas had the top Gaucho finish of the day with a third-place on the three-meter board with a score of 231.30. The women divers were the only ones to compete today (UNLV does not have men's diving) and they held their dual in Pasadena.

The meet ended on a high note for UCSB as the women's 'A' 400 free relay team of Ward, Yamauchi, Neely and Hunt captured first in 3:31.06. The men's team, which chose to swim the event as an exhibition, had the top time as Peterson, Kuhn, Thompson and Ferguson touched in 3:02.81.

With the wins, the UCSB women improve to 3-3 in dual meets this season while the men remain undefeated at 4-0.

Both teams will be back in action on Jan. 27 when they head to Pacific for a dual meet with the Tigers. The meet is slated for a 1 p.m. start.
