LONG BEACH, Calif. - With day two of the Arena Invitational in the books, the UC Santa Barbara men moved up one spot into fifth place, while the women remained in eighth position at Belmont Plaza Olympic Pool.
The men now have 410 points and trail BYU in the rankings. Stanford has run away with the meet for the second year in a row after posting 1414 points through two days. The Gaucho women remain in eighth with 302 points and also trail BYU who has 349 points. The Cal women have a strong hold on first with 831.5 points.
Carissa Metcalf posted the first NCAA 'B' cut on the meet so far for the Gauchos en route to a second place finish in the 100 breaststroke (1:02.08). Her second place finish was also the top finish for the day for UCSB.
The day began with the 200 medley relay and saw the men's 'A' team of Alexander Campbell, Tyler Jean, Mickey Mowry and Wade Allen come in sixth place with a time of 1:31.01. The women's 'A' relay took an eighth place finish behind Allie Knight, Metcalf, Monica Garcia and Katie Tomkinson (1:44.05).
For the second straight day, Knight advanced to the consolation final in the individual medley event. This time it was the 400 IM and she finished in ninth place once again (4:20.57).
The men's 100 butterfly featured Allen advancing to the consolation final (49.60) and narrowly edging out fellow Gaucho Mowry (49.64) to finish 14th and 15th, respectively. Parker Bovenberg qualified for the bonus final and finished in 20th.
Lucas Norman and Campbell both made it to the finals in the 200 freestyle and Norman came away on top taking sixth overall (1:38.80). Campbell was close behind coming in eighth overall (1:41.38). In the same event, Mowry advanced to the consolation final taking 16th overall while Lemley and Andrew Dossa placed 18th and 20th, respectively, in the bonus final.
The women's 100 breaststroke was highlighted by Metcalf's 'B' cut and second place finish, but also saw Paige Bradley and Erica Taylor advance to the consolation final. Bradley would finish 12th while Taylor was 16th. Charis Hoppe would also place in the bonus final at 20th overall.
In the men's 100 breaststroke, Jean came away with a 10th place finish after advancing to the consolation final. Freshman Andy Castilleja advanced to the bonus final and ended up 17th overall.
The final individual event of the day saw a pair of Gauchos, Collin Baratte and Josh Smith; finish 11th and 12th respectively in the 100 backstroke.
The last event of the day was the 800 freestyle relays. The men's 'A' squad of Norman, Lemley, Campbell and Dossa came up with an impressive fourth place finish (6:39.07). The women's 'A' relay of Alanis, Micaela Velasquez, Garcia and Anne Peanasky finished in seventh place (7:29.23).
The Gauchos conclude the three-day meet tomorrow. Events will include the 1650 freestyle, 200 backstroke, 100 freestyle, 200 breaststroke, 200 butterfly and 400 freestyle relay.
