UCSB Defeats UCSD in Dual Meet at Campus Pool
SANTA BARBARA, Calif. – The UCSB swimming and diving teams defeated UC San Diego in their dual meet Saturday. Through thirty-two events the women came out with a 172-113 victory and the men completed the sweep by winning 184-113.
The meet began with the women sweeping the 1 meter and 3 meter diving portions. Mariah Renteria and Hannah Tomp each qualified for the NCAA Zone championships, with final scores of 269.35 and 266.85 respectively. Monika Terry came in 1st place and within 5 points of qualifying for the NCAA Zone championships with a score of 275.95 in 3 meter diving. Lester Wright came in 1st place in the 1meter and 3 meter diving events for the men with scores of 376.70 and 365.85.
The women got off to a fast start in the 200 yard medley relays. Led by captain Allie Knight, Andrea Ward, Katie Records, and Charis Hoppe the ladies took home 1st place with a time of 1:42.05. The reigning MPSF Female athlete of the week for the second week in a row, Ward won the 1000 yard freestyle by a margin of 25 seconds, with a time of 10:04.32. Ward also continued her winning ways by finishing 1st in the 100 yard freestyle with a time of 51.66.
In the 100 yard breaststroke Carissa Metcalf held off teammates Sophia Yamauchi and Records to come in 1st place with a time of 1:03.75. Records returned the favor by narrowly edging out Metcalf in the 200 yard breaststroke with a time of 2:18.02, only 5 tenths of a second ahead Yamauchi won the 50 yard freestyle with a time of 24.29.Heren Alanis won the 400 yard individual medley in 4:27.24 while Anne Peanasky came in 2nd with a time of 4:33.19.
The 200 yard medley relay team of Randy Aukhus, Andy Castilleja, Mickey Mowry, and Ryan Hanni took home 1st place with a time of 1:32.70 to get the men on track. Andrew Barmann followed up with a victory in the 1000 yard freestyle (9:27.62). Later, Barmann won the 500 yard freestyle with a time of 4:33.55. Albert Miao took home a decisive victory over UCSD's Michael Leung with a time of 52.15 in the 100 yard backstroke, finishing 3 tenths of a second ahead of 2nd place Leung.
Mowry and Aukhus finished 1st and 2nd in the 200 yard butterfly with time of 1:49.17 and 1:53.30, respectively. Aukhus also finished first in the 200 yard backstroke (1:52.81). Hanni took 1st in the 50 yard and 100 yard freestyles with impressive times of 20.88 and 45.49.
Yoessef Tibazi was victorious in the 100 yard butterfly with a time of 50.58. To wrap up the day the 200 yard freestyle relay was won by the team of chase Lemly, Tibazi, Lukas Paulauskas, and Chris Dotson.
The Gauchos head on the road to take on the University of Redlands in Redlands, Calif. in a dual on Saturday, November 16.
