Swimmers Face Mid-Season Test at Las Vegas Invitational

SANTA BARBARA, Calif. – The UCSB men's and women's swimming teams head to Las Vegas for a three-day invitational (Nov. 21-23) on the campus of UNLV. This meet will serve as a checkpoint for the swimmers as we near the mid-way point of the year.

"We've had one of the best starts to a fall quarter in several years;" head coach Gregg Wilson said, "It will be a tremendous opportunity to continue improving against some really tough competition."

Several top tier swimming schools will be present in Vegas. On the men's side, No. 5 Stanford, Arizona State, BYU, Northern Arizona, Wyoming, and host No. 25 UNLV will be competing. The women's field features ten teams, led by the No.1 ranked California, No. 17 UCLA, Arizona State, BYU, Colorado State, Northern Arizona, Oregon State,  Wyoming, and UNLV.

The three-day meet is set up like the NCAA conference championship format. There will be preliminaries each morning to determine who will swim the finals in the evening.

The men will be competing without junior Wade Allen and senior Ryan Hanni. The women will be competing without standout senior Andrea Ward and junior Katie Records. Those four swimmers will be headed to Texas for a swim invite on December 5th. Without four of their top swimmers, the depth of the Gauchos will be tested.

"The freshmen have a chance to establish themselves." Wilson said, "They have had such a fantastic training camp and have been swimming exceptionally, and will have more opportunities then they normally have, since we don't have a full squad."

The divers will not be competing and their next dive invite is in Mission Viejo on December 13th. The Gauchos will be idle over Thanksgiving break, with the Texas swim invite up next on December 5th.
