Win in Final Race Leads UCSB Women’s Swim to Victory Over UC Davis

DAVIS, Calif. - The UC Santa Barbara women's swim team fought until the very end to snatch the win from UC Davis on Jan 19. The women finished with an incredibly close score of 150-144 after placing first in the 400 freestyle relay.

"Today's meet was very exciting as it came down to the last relay. This gave our women a chance to race tough while facing adversity as we knew we had to overcome Davis' 32 diving points and make every point count," stated Head Coach Matt Macedo.

The final winning relay consisted of Jacquelyn Harris, Haley Herzberg, Emily Ward, and Leanne Sun. They finished with a time of 3:28.36, out-swimming their competitors by almost a full second. Sun anchored the relay and had a highlighted swim of the day in this race with a split time of 51.22, leading her team to victory.

"Our women won 10 of 14 swimming events with several in-season best times which was exactly what we talked about before the meet. Davis is always tough, especially at home so we knew they would be ready. Standout swims came from Emily Ward in the 200 free, Herzberg in the 1000 and Heaven Quintana in both breaststrokes. Brittany Straw's 400 IM and Sun's 400 free relay anchor splits were huge swims for the women and finished a very close meet," continued Macedo.

Quintana scored big again in this meet receiving first in the 100 breaststroke (1:03.45) and a close second in the 200 breaststroke (2:18.85), only .8 away from first.

Ward out-touched UC Davis in the 200 freestyle, grabbing first with a time of 1:52.62. She also was a huge contributor in the exciting 400 freestyle relay race.

Emily Boggess (10:15.59) and Herzberg (10:20.79) snagged first and second in the 1000 freestyle helping their team march on to victory.

Straw came back fighting this season after surgery on her elbow during summer. In this meet she finished first in the grueling 400 individual medley (4:26.55).

On Jan 20, both UCSB men and women swim will face off against UOP in Stockton, Calif. at 11:00am. There are only two dual meets left for the Gauchos before MPSF Championships beginning on Feb 14.

Macedo stated, "We look forward to racing a tough UOP team tomorrow and are gearing up for Conference".

Go Gauchos!
