DAVIS, Calif. - It was a close pair of dual meets for the UCSB men and women's swim teams this Friday as the Gauchos faced UC Davis on the road at Schaal Aquatics Center. The UCSB women captured a 181-111 victory over the Aggies, but the men fell short by only 14 points, dropping their side of the meet, 154-140.
Without a diving team and the points one would garner, the Gauchos started the meet trailing behind the Aggies.
The men didn't fair as well as UC Davis' `A' and `B' team came in before the Gauchos due to the disqualification of UCSB's `A' relay.
The women continued to dominate the meet by winning every event except the 100 breaststroke, which went to UC Davis' Morgan Lee (1:05.72).
The distance races went well for the Gaucho women. In the 1,000 freestyle, Meagan Brown came in first with a time of 10:25.38 and Astrid Amsallem came in right after her teammate with a time of 10:27.07. Amsallem also took third place in the 500 freestyle with a time of 5:09.04.
In the 200 freestyle, UCSB scored big with Katie Stover taking first (1:51.83) on the women's side and a top-three sweep in the men's race thanks to Scott Vogelgesang (1:40.08), Joe Plume (1:40.34) and Ryan Hanni (1:42. 13).
The sprints were a breeze for the Gauchos with May coming in first in the 50 (23.69) and 100 freestyle (51.37). On the men's side, Chris Peterson came in first in the 50 freestyle (20.52) and Hanni won the 100 freestyle with a time of 45.70.
The 200 backstroke was another good event for UCSB with the men and women going one-two. Jessica Schwalb came in first with a mark of 2:06.09 and was followed by Mariana Prutton, who posted a time of 2:06.81. Ryan Garcia came in first in the men's 200 back (1:49.80), followed by Shane Hurter (1:51.82).
The UCSB women finished the meet strong, going one-two in the 400 freestyle relay. The `A' team made up of Javanifard, Sasza Lohrey, Stover and Katie Tomkinson came in with a time of 3:30.54. The `B' team of Olivia Plume, Ure, Emma Hunt and Kelsey Lewis came in at 3:34.18.
For the Gaucho men, the meet did not go as well, with the Aggies winning the last four individual races. UCSB was able to finish the meet on a high note, however, with a first place finish by Vogelgesang, Peterson, Plume and Kevin Ferguson (3:04.63) in the 400 freestyle relay.
UCSB will conclude its 2009-10 dual meet schedule on Saturday when it visits Big West Conference foe Pacific.
