AUSTIN, Texas - UCSB took an elite group of swimmers to represent them at the 2006 American Short Course Championship hosted by Longhorn Aquatics at the Lee and Joe Jamail Texas Swimming Center March 2-4, 2006.
Competing against names like Michael Phelps and Ian Crocker this meet is fast to say the least. It is a great opportunity for UCSB to compete against the best in the nation and to put up NCAA qualifying times, as well as gain strategic race experience.
After the first day of competition UCSB is competing well. Jen Schwalb took fifth in the 100 butterfly with a time of 55.19. Freshman Katlin Freeman also had a good showing taking sixth in the 100 breaststroke, 1:04.19. The 400 free relay was the best event for UCSB on both the men's and women's side, each team taking third in that event. Bradley Matsumoto, Curtis Bauer, Robert Hansen and Mason Edwards earning the time of 3:05.26 for the men, and Jenisse Demeulenaere, Erin Yamamoto, Jamie Lathers and Nadia Dwidar swimming a 3:29.25 for third as well.
The UCSB women took ninth in the 200 Medley relay: Lathers, DeMeulenaere, Freeman and Dwidar with a time of 1:47.33. Erin Yamamoto took 34th in the 200 free with a time of 1:52.27 and teammate Jessica Cruzat coming in just behind her for 36th place with a time of 1:52.38. DeMeulenaere took 48th in the 100 fly with a time of 59.76.
On the men's side they took tenth in the 200 Medley (Matsumoto, Ramsey, Bauer and Edwards) 1:36.20. In the 100 fly Curtis Bauer took 30th, 51.80, and in the 200 free Brock Roverud took 43rd with a time of 1:43.73.
The meet continues Friday March 3, 2006 with prelims in the day and finals starting at 6pm at the Lee and Joe Jamail Texas Swimming Center.
