Gauchos Swim Past Oregon State, Fall to UCLA
Oct. 24, 2009
SANTA BARBARA, Calif.- The UC Santa Barbara women's swim team competed in their 2009-2010 season opener swim meet against the Oregon State and the UCLA on Saturday afternoon at Campus Pool. The Gauchos lost to UCLA with a score of 165-94, but beat OSU 182-80 in the sixth annual triple dual meet against the two Pac-10 teams.
UCSB started off a little rocky with the disqualification of the 200 medley "A" relay in the first event. The Bruins were able to capture a first, third and fourth place in the event to take an early lead. The UCLA "A" relay of Isabell Fisher, Brittan Beauchan, Lindsey Marchand and Emma Drysdale won the event with a time of 1:45.80.
Once the individual events commenced, UCSB swam past OSU 1000 freestyle, 200 and backstroke. Meagan Brown took fourth in the 1000 with a time of 10:26.99 and Katie Stover took third in the 200 with a time of 1:53.10. Senior Naomi Javanifard also took a third place in the 100 backstroke with a time of 57.55, just behind the UCLA's Laurence Delisle, who had a time of 57.45.
Freshman Emily Adamczyk had a fantastic meet placing second in three events, the 100 breaststoke (1:06.00), the 200 breaststroke (2:18.91) and the 400 IM (4:29.17).
The sprints on Saturday also proved to be a major strength for the UCSB women. Taking first, second and third in the 50 freestyle was Kandall Neely (23.95), Anne Marie May (24.20) and Courtney Bauer (24.34).
In the 100 freestyle, the Gauchos took first and second thanks to Sasza Lohrey (52.09) and May (52.33).
The distance was a weak point in the Gauchos meet on Saturday with UCLA taking first, second and third in both the 1000 and 500 freestyle events. UCLA's Sam VandenBerge took first in both events with times of 10:13.27 and 5:00.35, respectively.
The Gauchos rounded out the meet with a one-two finish in the 400 free relay sealing their victory over OSU, but it was not enough to beat UCLA. The Bruins also defeated the Beavers 182-77.
The men's and women's swim teams will both be competing next Saturday, Oct. 31, in a non-conference dual meet against Cal Poly in San Luis Obispo.
