SANTA BARBARA, Calif. - Freshman swimmer Andrea Ward set three school records and won three events at the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation Swimming and Diving Championships last week in Long Beach, earning her UCSBgauchos.com Gaucho of the Week honors.
Ward was the first individual event winner of the weekend as she captured the 500 freestyle title in a school-record time of 4:48.60. Her time broke Michele Hlinka's 1991 record, set at 4:49.35.
She set her second record of the weekend in the 100 fly, touching the wall first in 53.83 seconds. The time was .08 seconds faster than Jen Schwalb's 2005 record.
In her third individual event of the weekend - the 1650 free - she took second with a time of 16:49.91 and her 1000-yard split broke a 20-year old school record. She swam the 1000 in 10:03.01, which was 2.69 seconds faster than Tabitha Bonney's 1991 record.
Ward also had strong relay performances throughout the weekend. She helped the Gauchos to a win in the 200 medley relay as the team posted a time of 1:40.08. She took second in both the 400 medley relay (3:42.12) and in the 400 free relay (3:21.53).
The freshman also helped the Gauchos to a third place finish in the 800 free relay and her leadoff 200 split was 1:49.12, just .03 seconds off of Courtney Bauer's 2008 school record in the event.
The Gauchos finished their first MPSF Championships in second place. UC Davis won the conference crown.
