SANTA BARBARA, Calif. - Senior Katy Freeman helped lead the UC Santa Barbara women to their 13th Big West Conference title last weekend at Belmont Plaza in Long Beach, Calif.
Freeman swam the breaststroke leg of the Big West champion 200 medley relay and 400 medley relay teams. The Gaucho relay team of Naomi Javanifard, Freeman, Erin Yamamoto and Anne Marie May set a new school, conference and meet record in the 200 medley relay with a time of 1:38.40 on the opening day of the championships.
The same team set a new meet record in the 400 medley relay with a time of 3:37.88, just .01 seconds off of matching their school record.
Individually, Freeman won the 200 breast in a school, conference and meet record-setting time of 2:09.12, which is an automatic qualifying time for the NCAA Championships.
Freeman took second in the 100 breast in 1:00.48, which is a school record and also surpassed the previous Big West and meet records. She took second in the 200 individual medley as well in a time of 2:01.24.
Freeman and several of her teammates will be in action again at the 2009 NCAA Championships the weekend of Mar. 19-21 in College Station, Texas.
