SANTA BARBARA, Calif. - UC Santa Barbara swimmer Katy Freeman has been named UCSBgauchos.com Athlete of the Week for the second time this season after earning All-American honors at the 2009 NCAA Swimming and Diving Championships at Texas A&M this past weekend.
Freeman took eighth-place in the 200 breaststroke final on Saturday posting a time of 2:10.12. It was her morning swim, however, in which she really excelled. Freeman posted the third fastest time in Saturday's preliminary heats with a school and Big West Conference record-setting time of 2:08.50, which was .62 seconds faster than her previous record.
Freeman also swam in the 100 breast at the championships and posted a time of 1:01.29, placing 30th in the event's prelims.
She is the second Gaucho in two years to qualify for an event final at the NCAA championships. UCSB finished 35th overall at the meet.
