SANTA BARBARA, Calif. - UC Santa Barbara water polo player Milos Golic and swimmer Katy Freeman each earned Academic All-District honors from the College Sports Information Directors (CoSIDA) it was announced on Thursday. Golic was named to the All-District Eight First Team, making him eligible for Academic All-America honors.
Golic and Freeman were recognized for their standout performances in the classroom and the pool, joining the nation's best student-athletes on the All-District at-large lists. The All-District at-large teams include student-athletes that compete in swimming, water polo, golf, men's volleyball and tennis.
Golic is a sophomore who has posted a 3.85 GPA as a business economics major. He has already been awarded with Academic All-Mountain Pacific Sports Federation honors this year and was also the recipient of the Golden Eagle Ring Award, which is given to one UCSB male and one female student-athlete who has posted highest GPA.
Not just a performer in the classroom, Golic was also named a First Team All-American following his 2008 campaign in which he led the Gauchos with 82 goals and led the MPSF with an average of 3:04 goals per game. He also garnered First Team All-MPSF honors.
Freeman was named to the All-District Eight Third Team. The senior has posted a 3.67 cumulative GPA and is majoring in linguistics. Freeman has also earned Academic All-Big West honors this season and was the UCSB women's swimming Golden Eagle Award winner.
The senior had a stellar season in the pool and earned All-American honors in the 200 breaststroke at the NCAA Championships. She set new school records in the 100 breast, 200 breast and the 200 and 400 medley relays.
Coincidentally, Golic and Freeman were named UCSB's Male and Female Athletes of the Year at The SB Awards - an event that honored the 2008-09 year in Gaucho athletics - on Wednesday evening.
