Freeman Sets U.S. Open Meet Record
Aug. 4, 2009
Katy Freeman hit the wall first in a blistering 2:22.51 to win Gold and set a new U.S. Open meet record in the 200 breaststroke meet record by more than three seconds. Her time currently ranks 6th in the World and second in the United States behind Rebecca Soni.
"She was fourth at the turn and just swam an exceptional last 50 to bring it home," said UCSB coach Gregg Wilson. "I'm incredibly happy for Katy. She has worked very hard and this win puts her in some elite international company."
Last month on the final day of the World University Games swim competition - UC Santa Barbara alum, Freeman, helped the United States women's 400-meter medley relay team to a gold medal. The team recorded a time of 4:01.90, beating out second-place Italy by 0.85 seconds.
Recently, UCSB Athletics announced that, for the first time, donors will be able to pledge their support to The Gaucho Fund (or The G-Fund for short) and immediately be eligible to receive a wide variety of donor benefits.
The Gaucho Fund is the Athletic Department's vehicle for securing restricted and unrestricted annual support for all 20 of its intercollegiate athletic programs. The Gaucho Fund provides educational, academic, leadership and administrative support for all 450 of the school's student-athletes.
Please contact Associate Athletics Director Steve O'Brien at 893-4960 or email@example.com with any questions about The Gaucho Fund or how to support UCSB Athletics.
