SANTA BARBARA, Calif. - The UC Santa Barbara women's swim team had four members earn Academic All-American honors, and one earn honorable mention accolades, it was announced on Oct. 17 by the College Swimming Coaches Association. The entire women's team also earned team recognition for its collective 3.249 GPA.
Gaucho swimmers Katy Freeman, Anne Marie May, Naomi Javanifard and Erin Yamamoto each earned Academic All-American honors for their diligence in the classroom combined with their performance in the pool. Freeman led the squad with her 4.00 GPA, one of 24 Division I women swimmers in the nation to post a perfect GPA.
In addition to their Academic All-American honors, Freeman, Javanifard and Yamamoto each also earned Honorable Mention All-American honors at the 2008 NCAA Division I Championships and May earned All-American honors for her third-place finish in the 50 freestyle. The team finished 25th at the NCAA Championships.
Liz Wagner rounded out the group with her Honorable Mention Academic All-American accolade.
The UC Santa Barbara swim teams will open the 2008-09 season on Nov. 1 when they head to Cal State Northridge for a dual meet with the Matadors.
