SANTA BARBARA, Calif. - After successful outings at the Husky Invitational last weekend, UC Santa Barbara's Matt Bartlett and Sara Nicponski earned Big West Swimming & Diving Athlete of the Week honors, for the week ending Dec. 2. This is the first honor of the season for both Gauchos.
At the Federal Way, Wash., event, Bartlett set a school record in the 200 free with a time of 1:37.67. The Atlanta, Ga., native also set a personal-best time of 1:48.52 in the 200 IM, which placed him fourth. Bartlett picked up a third place finish in the 200 butterfly (1:45.99) and posted a time of 49.31 in the 100 back stroke.
The freshman from Salt Lake City, Utah, shined at last weekend's swim meet by shattering two school records and two relay records and registering two NCAA qualifying times. Nicponski's two Gaucho records came in the breast stroke with a time of 1:01.56 in the 100 meters and 2:16.63 in the 200 meters. Both of marks were good enough to qualify for the NCAA Championships. Along with Gaucho teammates, she also set UCSB records in the 200 and 400 medley relay.
As a team, the Gauchos did quite well at a four-day event that was loaded with top 25 teams. The women came out in fourth place garnering 823.5 points and the men turned in a fifth place finish with 643 points. UC Santa Barbara returns to the pool on Dec. 15 when they travel to Las Vegas, Nev., to participate in the three day UNLV Invite.
