Women's Tennis Opens Season With Strong Showing on Day One of Gaucho Classic

The UC Santa Barbara women's tennis team opened its 2011 season with an impressive showing on day one of the second annual Gaucho Classic.

The Gauchos won four of five matches in flight "A" singles.  Kiersten Meehan defeated Malia Wahinepio of Northern Arizona 6-4, 6-0 and Sofia Novak began her final season as a Gaucho with a 6-0, 6-3 win over Lauren Mulhern of Colorado State.

Freshman April Scatliffe battled back from a first set loss in her collegiate debut and defeated Tori Arneson of Colorado State 4-6, 6-3, 6-1. Natalia Lozano grew stronger as her match against Jessica Parizher progressed and pulled out a 7-5, 6-1 victory.

Katerina Mozolyuk earned her first win at UCSB in fight "B" singles defeating Marjani Simmons of Cal State Northridge 6-1, 6-2.

In doubles Natalia Lozano and Jordan Dockendorf notched an 8-3 win over Arneson/Wajakowska of Colorado State. Lozano and Scatliffe teamed up top defeat Pironkova/Rohonyi of Loyola Marymount 8-1.

The Gaucho Classic will continue tomorrow morning beginning with doubles matches at 10 a.m.
