Gauchos Battles No. 55 Fresno State Before Losing

FRESNO, Calif. - Erica Cano and Sofia Novak won their match at No. 2 doubles on Friday, but No. 55 Fresno State was too much for visiting UC Santa Barbara, 7-0.

Cano and Novak blasted Olga Kirpicheva and Laura Pola at No. 2 doubles, 8-2.  Novak also had an outstanding showing at No. 1 singles as she pushed Marianne Jodoin, the 47th-ranked player in the nation, to three sets.  She ultimately lost 6-0, 2-6, 6-3.

The other five singles matches were 2-0 Bulldog sweeps, but three of them were lengthy battles.  At No. 3, Kirpicheva outlasted April Scatliffe, 6-4, 6-4.  At No. 4, Kiersten Meehan tested Bianca Modoc before dropping a 7-5, 6-3 decision and at No. 5, it was Pola edging Jordan Dockendorf, 6-3, 7-5.

The loss ended the Gauchos three-match winning streak.  They are now 7-11 overall.

On Saturday, UCSB will remain in Fresno to play the University of Nevada in a neutral site match that will begin at 11:00 a.m.
