Gauchos Battle Through First Day of USTA/ITA Southwest Regional

SAN DIEGO, Calif. - Junior April Scatliffe and freshman Kaiulani Boyer each won their first round match and several other UC Santa Barbara advanced in the consolation rounds on the first day at the USTA/ITA Southwest Regional at San Diego State on Thursday.

Scatliffe, who played No. 1 for the Gauchos throughout her sophomore season, defeated fellow-Big West opponent Brooke Schweyer of UC Irvine in the first round, 6-2, 4-6, 6-3. Scatliffe then lost a tough 7-6, 4-6, 6-3 decision to Loyola Marymount's Laura Mueller in the second round. Mueller had a first round bye.

Boyer, a first-year player from Irvine, Calif., defeated Cal State Fullerton's Megan Sandford 7-5, 4-6, 6-2, before losing to Long Beach State's Ebba Unden, 6-7(4), 6-3, 6-2.

Kiersten Meehan, Stacy Yam, Priscila Garcia, Kaiulani Boyer, Melissa Baker and Luisa Ortiz Candido all dropped their first round matchess and moved into the consolation bracket. Meehan, Yam, Ortiz Candido and Garcia were each automatically moved into the Friday's third round of the bracket while Baker will play a second round match against Morgan McIntosh of Cal State Fullerton.

In the doubles draw, the tandems of Scatliffe/Meehan Boyer/Garcia and Baker/Yam all had first round byes and will compete in Friday's second round
