PULLMAN, Wash.—Up in the Pacific Northwest this weekend, the UC Santa Barbara women's tennis team (1-4) was slated to face off against Pac-12 programs, Washington State (8-1) and University of Washington (4-1). Taking on the Cougars earlier today, UCSB looked to pull off an impressive win against a strong Washington St. team. Unfortunately, the Cougars were too much to handle as the Gauchos endured through a tough 6-1 decision.
Despite the recent success from the doubles pairs, the Cougars proved to be a very talented and deep squad. The strong pairs of Washington St. overpowered UCSB as the Cougars swept the Gauchos with a 6-1 victory on court No. 1 and a 6-0 win on court No. 2. Dropping the doubles point to the Cougars, the Gauchos needed to capitalize with four wins from the singles matches.
With continuous improvement, mental toughness and a deep squad, the Gauchos have the ability to string points together and win any match. Despite the strong play from the team, the Gauchos pulled off a single win during the singles matches.
Freshman, Kaiulani Boyer played on court No. 1 for the Gauchos today and showcased flashes of her talent. Ultimately, Boyer suffered a 6-2, 6-2 defeat. Junior, April Scatliffe hung tight during her match but could not pull off the victory as she went down with a 6-2, 6-3 loss. On court No. 4, junior Paola Cos was engaged in a back-and-forth three setter. After coming back in the match with a decisive second set win, Cos could not corral the victory as she was defeated in an enticing third set. The lone win for the Gauchos came from freshman, Melissa Baker as her opponent retired after one game in the first set.
UCSB will now move forward and put this loss behind as the team will match up against nationally ranked No. 41 Washington tomorrow, Sunday, Feb. 9th at 10 a.m.
