SANTA BARBARA, Calif.—After two weeks of being on the road, UC Santa Barbara (2-9, 1-1) will finally return home this weekend to host a pair of matches. Santa Barbara will first host a Big West conference match against UC Davis (5-5, 1-1) on Saturday, Mar. 8 at noon and then host a non conference match against Fresno State (4-7, 1-0) on Sunday, Mar. 9 at 10 a.m.
UCSB is coming off of two very narrow defeats from last weekend. The Gauchos matched up against San Jose State and played it close till the very end. Losing the doubles point, the Gauchos faced an early deficit against the Spartans. Even though UCSB swept San Jose State on courts 4, 5 and 6 during the singles portions, the Gauchos could not record the victory as the Spartans won the singles matches on courts 1 through 3. Junior Stacy Yam, freshman Jaimee Gilbertson and sophomore Luisa Ortiz Candido all recorded victories during their singles matches against the Spartans.
Coming off the loss to San Jose, the Gauchos quickly turned to its next opponent, No. 64 Santa Clara University. The match was back and forth as both teams were playing exceptionally well throughout the day's action. Despite the singles victories from freshmen Kaiulani Boyer and Jaimee Gilbertson, and junior Paola Cos, UCSB endured another tight 4-3 loss to the Broncos.
Returning home for this weekend's pair of matches, UCSB will look to not only add another win to the record, but more importantly improve its conference record in order to reach the goal of winning the Big West.
