SANTA BARBARA, Calif.—The UC Santa Barbara women's tennis team (3-12, 2-1) returns home for finals week after last weekend's trip to Las Vegas, Nev. Santa Barbara dropped both of its matches last week; suffering a very tight 4-3 loss to a tough UNLV team and a 6-1 defeat to nationally ranked No. 27 Columbia.
The Gauchos will look to rebound from last week's performance as the team will host No. 53 Kansas State (7-5) on Saturday, Mar. 22 at noon and then match up against Big West opponent Hawai'i (6-7, 2-1) on Monday, Mar. 24 at 11 a.m. Following the two matches, the Gauchos will have a midweek face off as Sacramento State (4-8) will come to town on Wednesday, Mar. 26 at noon.
The Gauchos got off to a strong start last weekend as the team capitalized the doubles point against UNLV. Juniors April Scatliffe and Stacy Yam got UCSB on the right track as the duo won their match on court No. 2. Sealing the doubles point for the Gauchos was on court 3 where senior, Kiersten Meehan and sophomore, Luisa Ortiz Candido won their respective match, 8-3.
Despite the hot start, the Gauchos could not seal the win as the Rebels won four of the six singles matches. Courts 5 and 6 belonged to UCSB as junior, Paola Cos recorded a 6-3, 6-2 victory while freshman Jaimee Gilbertson sealed another win with a 7-6, 3-6, 7-5 victory.
UCSB had a tough challenge as the team faced off against No. 27 Columbia. The Gauchos were overmatched for most of the day as the Lions took control of all doubles and singles matches. Despite the loss, freshman, Jaimee Gilbertson extended her dual season singles match win streak to seven matches. Gilbertson has supplanted her spot on court No. 6 with her play during the last month as the Australia native is on a roll with seven match win streak.
