SANTA BARBARA, Calif.—Freshman, Jaimee Gilbertson was honored the Big West Player of the Week award after an impressive 4-0 outing during last weekend's conference action.
Gilbertson earned two victories each in her singles and doubles matches against Big West foes, Cal Poly and Cal State Northridge. Her 4-0 record last weekend helped Santa Barbara split its last two conference matches of the regular dual season as the team lost to Cal Poly, 4-3, but bounced back with a 5-2 victory over the Matadors.
Gilbertson earned a come from behind 3-6, 6-1, 7-5 victory over previous Big West Player of the Week winner, Emily Gibbens on court 2. The Noosa, Australia native then cruised to a 6-2, 6-4 win on court 1 against Northridge's Vivian Lin.
The freshman has also been solid in the doubles matches; now riding a four match win streak with partner, Priscila Garcia. The duo defeated the Mustangs' pair, Mika Padmanabhan and Kathryn Webb on court 2 with an 8-4 score. Gilbertson and Garcia then escaped with a narrow 8-7 victory over the Matador tandem of Lin and Jessica Warren.
For the season, Gilbertson holds a solid 12-5 singles record with a three match win streak on courts 1 and 2. Recording an eight match win streak at the five and six positions earlier in the season, the freshman is climbing up the ladder and proving herself as one of the top players in the Big West.
The Gauchos will have a week off to prepare for the Big West Tournament which is held next Thursday to Sunday, Apr. 24-27 in Indian Wells, Calif.
