ATHENS, Ga. - The UC Santa Barbara doubles team of Palina Dubavets and Melissa Baker will play the No. 16 team of Joana Valle Costa/Ryann Foster of LSU on Thursday in the first round of the NCAA Doubles Championship at the University of Georgia.
The tandem of Dubavets and Bakers is ranked 51st in the latest Intercollegiate Tennis Association Rankings. They teamed together to go 7-3 during the season, all in dual matches. Valle Costa and Foster have gone 12-10 overall and 9-10 in the Southeastern Conference.
"I'm proud of Melissa and Palina, they were the best ranked team in our conference and its a great accomplishment to qualify for the NCAA championship," said head coach Simon Thibodeau. "It's in the program's culture and mentality to send Gauchos to NCAA's each year. They are a dangerous team, had great preparation and are ready to face a tough LSU team. They will be ready to fight hard."
For Dubavets, it is her second consecutive trip to the NCAA Doubles Champiopnship. In 2016, she and Stefani Stojic defeated Rebeca Mitrea and Yulia Shupenia of DePaul in the first round before falling to top-seeded Hayley Carter and Whitney Kay of North Carolina, 6-4, 4-6, 10-7.
