SANTA BARBARA, Calif- Despite three big wins in singles, the UC Santa Barbara Women's Tennis team fell just short against No. 26 University of Washington with a 4-3 loss on Friday afternoon.
For the first time this season, a Gaucho opponent secured the doubles point to start out strong against UCSB.
"We struggled a little early on in doubles, but we're really happy with the way we fought in singles. We had a good chance to beat a really good team," said Head Coach Simon Thibodeau.
The uneaten UCSB pair comprised of freshman Anastasia Goncharova and Juliana Valero had their match cut short as it went unfinished against freshman Zoey Weil and Vanessa Wong when the score reached 5-4.
Washington continued to pile it on with wins on courts 1, 2, and 3 to deliver the eighth husky victory of the year.
Stacey Fung came out strong on court one with a 6-0, 6-2 two-set sweep over Volodko and Katarina Kopcalic followed up with a 6-4, 7-5 win against Amit Lev Ari from the three spot.
To clinch the win, Vanessa Wong completed the comeback against Tiffany Lagarde from court two with a 5-7, 6-1, 6-4 result to steal one from the Gauchos and secure a win for Washington.
It wasn't until the Huskies clinched the win before UCSB took some victories of their own.
Lise Sentenac closed out the day with a 4-6, 6-3, 6-3 victory of her own, but it was a case of too little too late as the damage had already been done.
The UC Santa Barbara women's tennis team will culminate its five-game home-stand with a match at home against San Jose State on Sunday, February 24 scheduled for a 10 a.m. first serve.
