Santa Barbara Calif, - UC Santa Barbara women's tennis dropped their season opener against visiting Santa Clara 4-3, in heartbreaking fashion Friday, at the Robertson Gymnasium courts.
With the match tied at 3-3, it came down to a decisive #6 singles match up between Michelle Murphy and Jessica Agra. After splitting the first two sets 6-2, 2-6 Murphy raced out to a 5-0 lead in the third set. Things looked pretty much under control with the match at 5-2 and Murphy leading 40-0, but it was not to be as Agra stormed back to claim the set 7-5 and clinch the match for Santa Clara.
"With the expectations we have for this year, it was a devastating way to start," said head coach Peter Kirkwood."I have been involved in some incredibly close and heartbreaking defeats in my career and this is right up there with any of them."
The day got off to an exciting start, with the doubles point coming down to the #3 match up where the combo of Jill Damion and Michelle Murphy won via tiebreaker 9-8 (3). Jordan Dockendorf and Natalia Lozano also earned a doubles victory defeating Katie Le and Jessica Agra 8-6.
The Gauchos hope to bounce back on Sunday against Northern Arizona. Match time is 10:00 a.m. at the Robertson Gymnasium courts on campus.
