No. 73 Gauchos Lose a Tough One to No. 67 Loyola Marymount 4-3
Feb. 10, 2007
SANTA BARBARA, Calif. - No. 73 UC Santa Barbara split six singles contests in Saturday's women's tennis match against 67th-ranked Loyola Marymount, but the visiting Lions won two of three in doubles to secure a hard-fought 4-3 victory.
Playing without its regular No. 2 player, junior Marta Simic, the Gauchos were forced to mix-up their lineup. Head coach Pete Kirkwood opted to keeps No. 3 player Charlotte Scatliffe in her customary spot, instead moving No. 4 player, freshman Tova Hausman to No. 2 and bumping No. 5 Asagi Onaga to No. 4, regular No. 6 Brittany Kausen to No. 5 and placing senior Kristen Wilson into the No. 6 spot.
Hausman proved up to the task at No. 2, posting a 7-6, 6-3 win over Robyn Baker. Another freshman, Carina Bjornstrom, dropped a three-set match at No. 1 to Pavla Mesterova, 4-6, 6-0, 6-2. UCSB lost both of the three-set matches on Saturday. Kausen lost at No. 5 to LMU's Bliss Nixon, 3-6, 6-4, 6-4.
In addition to Hausman's win at No. 2, Scatliffe and Onaga swept their matches at No. 3 and No. 4 respectively.
In doubles, the No. 3 tandem of Wilson and Kausen defeated Lions Nixon and Elrien de Villiers 9-8, but UCSB lost at No. 1 and No. 2.
The loss drops UCSB to 2-2 on the year while Loyola Marymount improves to 3-0.
The Gauchos return to action on Saturday, Feb. 17, when they host San Jose State at 11:00 p.m.
