Moraga, Calif. - The UC Santa Barbara women's tennis team started off its weekend road trip with a 5-1 loss to St. Mary's on Friday afternoon. Despite the score, head coach Pete Kirkwood was not concerned about his team's performance.
"I'm not too worried about our win-loss record," said the Gaucho head coach. "We're focusing on playing well and improving."
Kirkwood also stressed that the important matches will start later this month, with conference play approaching quickly.
"Right now we're doing our best to get ready for our first Big West match against Davis on February 27th. That's when they really start to count."
The only Gaucho victory came from Tova Hausman at the No. 6 position, as she defeated Molly Aloia (4-6, 7-5, 1-0 (10-5)).
At the No. 1 position, Sofia Novak was beaten by Catherine Isip (6-1, 6-1). Natalia Lozano, playing from the No. 2 spot, lost to Alex Poorta (6-4, 7-5). Anna Chikhikvishvili took down UC Santa Barbara's Asagi Onaga (6-4, 6-4), in the No. 3 slot.
"We didn't play badly today," coach Kirkwood said of his team. "St. Mary's is a good team and San Francisco is going to be similar tomorrow."
No doubles matches were played due to rain.
The Gauchos will return to action Saturday against the University of San Francisco at 11:00 a.m.
The February 6th home rainout against Fresno Pacific has been rescheduled for February 26th.
