Santa Barbara, Calif. - The UC Santa Barbara women's tennis team stormed into its home opener on Saturday afternoon posting a solid 5-2 victory over the visiting Roadrunners. After the Gauchos swept the doubles point, they went on to take four of the six singles matches.
In doubles action, the senior duo of Marta Simic and Charlotte Scatliffe made quick work out of San Antonio's Scida and Dedering, defeating them at the No. 1 slot, 8-2. After the Gauchos defeated the Roadrunners at the No. 3 slot, freshman Jill Damion and sophomore Asagi Onaga completed the sweep, winning 8-4. Santa Barbara has not lost a doubles match this year, completing three straight sweeps in a row against its last three opponents.
"Our doubles continues to be a plus for us this year," head coach Pete Kirkwood said. "After sweeping three straight matches (in doubles), I think we have been playing up to our potential."
The Gauchos continued to roll in singles competition, carrying their 1-0 advantage with them. At the No. 1 slot, Simic defeated UTSA's Scida in two sets, 6-3, 6-2. After the Gauchos dropped a point at their No. 2 spot, Santa Barbara rebounded, posting victories at the No. 3, 4 and 5 spots. Damion, Onaga and sophomore Tova Hausman all prevailed in their matches with the same score, 6-2, 6-1.
Santa Barbara will head to No. 36 Irvine for its first Big West Conference showdown of the season. The match will be played at Anteater Tennis Stadium at 1:00 p.m.
