Gauchos Sweep Past San Jose State, 7-0

SANTA BARBARA, Calif. - Sparked by the return of its No. 2 singles player Marta Simic, the UC Santa Barbara women's tennis team cruised past visiting San Jose State on Saturday 7-0 at the Robertson Gymnasium Courts.

Simic, who missed the last two matches with a leg injury, actually didn't return to singles action. She did, however, team with Charlotte Scatliffe for an 8-5 win over Amber Silverstone and Ashley Tavita at No. 1 doubles, helping the Gauchos earn the doubles point.

UCSB swept all six singles matches with just one, freshman Tova Hausman's 6-2, 2-6, 1-0 (11-9) win over Tavita at No. 3, going three sets. Freshman Carina Bjornstrom defeated Courney Koenigsfeld 7-6(5), 6-0 at No. 1. With Simic out of the singles lineup, Scatliffe was bumped up to No. 2 where she postetd a 7-6(3), 6-4 win over Silverstone. Another freshman, Asagi Onaga swept Silvana Dukic 6-3, 6-4 at No. 4. Junior Brittany Kausen, normally the No. 6 player, swept her match at No. 5 and senior Kristen Wilson swept hers at No. 6.

"The most impressive results came at the No. 2 and No. 3 positions," head coach Pete Kirkwood said. "Charlotte Scatliffe had a huge win at No. 2. She is playing as well as she has played all year. Tova really had to grind out her win. She was already battling a bad elbow and then she had some leg problems during the match. She truly fought for the win."

Hausman fought back from an 8-4 deficit in the super tiebreaker to improve her record on the season to 5-0.

The win improves UCSB's record overall record to 3-0. San Jose State drops to 0-2. The Gauchos return to the Robertson Gymnasium courts on Sunday, Feb. 18, when it hosts 42nd-ranked UC Irvine in an 11:00 a.m. match. Simic is expected to return to her No. 2 singles spot against the Anteaters.
