SANTA BARBARA, Calif. - After spending the better part of the day roll drying tennis courts, the UC Santa Barbara women's tennis team finally took the court at about 3:15 for its match with Hawaii. Once the contest got started, it was all Gauchos as they improved to 4-1 with a 5-1 win over the Rainbow Wahine.
UCSB started with singles and the Gauchos prevailed 5-1. It was a lot closer than the team score indicated as two matches took three sets.
"Sofia was absolutely clutch, pulling out a third set tie breaker to clinch the match," said Gaucho head coach Pete Kirkwood. "Natalia won in straight sets and was very good."
Jill Damion and Asagi Onaga joined the party with impressive wins at No. 2 and No. 4 respectively. Ratchaya Chaichanachaicharn (Jean) her second win in as many matches at No,. 6. Jean was up 5-2 and match point before rolling her ankle. She gutted out the last game limping around on one foot.
UCSB is now 4-1 on the year heading into our showdown match with arch rival Cal Poly on Friday. The start time has been moved up to 12:00.
