Gruenig's Return Sparks UCSB to 6-1 Victory Over Visiting UC Riverside

Feb. 19, 2006

SANTA BARBARA, Calif. - Senior Marielle Gruenig sat on the sidelines for three weeks. A sore shoulder prevented her from playing. On Sunday, she returned to the UC Santa Barbara lineup and easily dispatched her singles opponent as the Gauchos defeated UC Riverside, 6-1.

Gruenig, UCSB's three-time All-Big West player, topped Riverside's Casey Cross at No. 1 singles, 6-2, 6-0. In addition, Gruenig teamed with Chelsea Glynn at No. 2 doubles to post an 8-5 win over H.R. Espiritu and Yasmen Sakhakorn. The Gauchos won all three doubles matches to win the doubles point.

"It was great to get Marielle back today," said UCSB head coach Pete Kirkwood. "Getting her back really gave us a lift and I thought others fed off of that."

The Gauchos won five of the six singles points, in addition to their sweep of the doubles matches.

Gruenig's teammate in doubles, Glynn, posted a 7-5, 7-6 win over Espiritu. Her victory ended the match.

In addition to the wins by Gruenig and Glynn, UCSB won three other singles matches. At No. 4, Charlotte Scatliffe defeated Sakhakorn, 6-2, 6-1. Leslie Damion defeated Catrisha Cabanilla at No. 5, 6-2, 6-2. Mio Fukushima toppped Bethany Brendon at No. 6, 7-5, 6-2. The only UCSB singles loss was at No. 3, by Andrea Pintar, who was beaten by Erynne Oki, 6-3, 6-3.

Pintar, however, was a winner in doubles. She coupled with Scatliffe to defeat Cross and Oki at No. 1 doubles, 8-3. Damion and Fushima edged Cabanilla and Eri Yoshimoto at No. 3 doubles, 8-7 (7-5).

The victory improves UCSB to 4-2 on the year. Since losing their first two matches of the season, the Gauchos have won four straight.

UCSB will return to action on Monday, Feb. 20, when it travels to Cal Poly for a Big West match slated to start at 11:00 a.m.
