UC Santa Barbara, Calif. - The UC Santa Barbara women's tennis team dominated San Jose State Saturday afternoon at the UCSB Rob Gym courts taking the doubles point and sweeping in singles play.
The Gauchos walked onto the courts this afternoon with a chip on their shoulder, dropping the last two of three home matches. Unfortunately for the Spartans, they stood in the way of UCSB's sixth win of the season.
In doubles play, the Gauchos started hot, jumping out to an early 1-0 lead. At the No. 1 slot the duo of Natalia Lozano and Jill Damion trumped San Jose State's Silverstone and Anna Suzman, 8-2. At the No. 2 position, the pair of Michelle Murphy and Sofia Novak managed to hold Jennifer Williams and Silvana Dukic to the same score.
The UCSB women kept rolling in singles play, taking every match in two sets. Damion and Lozano set the stage for the Gauchos shutting out their opponents at the No. 2 and No. 6 spots respectively. Michelle Murphy secured an easy win on court one over Silverstone to clinch the match.
"Hopefully this gives us the confidence and belief that we are a good team," head coach Pete Kirkwood said. "One that is capable of winning the Big West tournament in April."
UCSB improves its overall record to 6-3 with the win while San Jose State drops to 3-3. The Gauchos are a perfect 5-0 in non-conference matches.
