SANTA BARBARA, Calif. - In a non-conference battle Wednesday at the UCSB Tennis Stadium, the UC Santa Barbara women's team upset 75th-ranked Southeastern Louisiana by a final score of 5-2.
With the win, the Gauchos improved to 7-4 in dual meet action, while the Loins - who easily defeated Big West Conference school UC Riverside on Tuesday - fell to 6-2.
UCSB got the ball rolling in doubles, winning two of the three contests. In the top spot, Andrea Pintar and Charlotte Scatliffe prevailed 8-5, while at No. 3 Leslie Daimon and Mio Fukoshima breezed to an 8-0 shutout. SLU avoided the doubles sweep on court two as Emilija Arnaudovska and Iva Velkovska squeezed out a 9-8 victory over Marielle Grruenig and Chelsea Glynn by winning the first-to-four-points tiebreaker.
However the Gaucho senior duo bounced back in singles play as Gruenig took care of Breda Kovac 6-0, 6-3 at the top spot and Glynn pulled out a hard-fought 6-1, 4-6, 6-4 win over Arnaudovska at No. 2. The remaining four courts all saw straight-set matches, with Scatliffe prevailing at No. 4 by a score of 6-4, 6-2 and Damion recording a 6-3, 7-5 victory in the No. 5 spot. Velkovska (6-4, 6-2) and Bonnie Phillips (6-2, 6-2) were triumphant for Southeastern Louisiana at No. 3 and 6, respectively.
UCSB continues its season-long seven-match homestand on Friday, March 3, hosting Furman in non-conference action at 1:30 p.m.
