Tucson, Ariz. -
Seniors Charlotte Scatliffe and Marta Simic had their impressive six game doubles winning streak snapped by the Arizona duo of Danielle Steingberg and Claire Reitsch this Saturday, as the Gauchos lost a competitive match 4-3, to the No. 52 ranked Wildcats.
The Gauchos jumped out early on the host Wildcats, when the doubles pair of senior Brittany Kausen and sophomore Tova Hausman took care of Jane Hue and Ariane Masschelein, 8-5 at the No. 3 doubles spot. Arizona quickly rebounded with an impressive 8-1 win at No. 1 doubles. The Wildcats clinched the doubles point with a tightly contested 9-8 victory at No. 2 doubles, as Claire Reitsch and Natalia Toporowska barely edged freshman Jill Damion and sophomore Asagi Onaga.
In singles action, Charlotte Scatliffe set the tone dominating the Wildcats Toporowska in straight sets, 6-1, 6-2. Arizona responded tallying the score sheet with wins at No. 1 and No. 6. UCSB evened the score at 3-3, with victories at the No. 2 and No. 4 slots. Jill Damion outlasted her counterpart Reitsch, posting a 7-5, 7-6, (10-5) winner. Teammate Onaga handled Huh at No. 4 singles, with a 6-2, 7-5 win. Arizona won the deciding match to earn the 4-3 victory, as Masschelein survived Hausman in a marathon match 3-6, 6-4, 6-4.
The last stop for the Gauchos in the desert is this Sunday, when they voyage to Tempe, to battle Arizona State University. First serve is slated for 10:00 a.m. (PT).
