UC Santa Barbara, Calif. - The UC Santa Barbara women?s tennis team downed the University of San Francisco, 6-1, this afternoon at the Rob Gym tennis courts to push their winning streak to four.
The Gauchos started hot, capturing the doubles point with victories at the No. 2 and No. 3 slots. Michelle Murphy teamed up with Sofia Novak to post an 8-5 win over Mylene Martin and Alan McMahon, 8-5, while Asagi Onaga cruised to an easy 8-2 victory over Julia Wartenberger and Jessy Mekpoh.
With the UCSB women up a point, the Gauchos carried the momentum over to singles play where they secured five out of the six matches. Bryanna Ojeda quickly staked UCSB to a 2-0 advantage by demolishing her opponent at the No. 2 position, 6-1, 6-0. Natalia Lozano followed with a decisive 6-3, 6-3 win at the No. 4 spot. With the Gauchos up big, Murphy and Novak sunk in their teeth to secure the win for UCSB, winning handedly at the No. 2 and No. 3 spots respectively. It took Onaga an extra set to trump her opponent, 6-3, 0-6, 6-0.
The sole victory for the Dons came on court one where Jenny-Lee Heisner defeated Jill Damion, 6-2, 6-1.
The Gauchos improve to 8-3 overall (2-3 in Big West). UCSB will take the courts Tuesday against Alabama Birmingham at the UCSB Rob Gym Courts.
