Gauchos Drop Rain-Shortened Match to San Francisco, 4-2
March 11, 2006
SANTA BARBARA, Calif. - UC Santa Barbara posted wins at No. 1 and No. 2 singles, but the rain prevented the play of doubles and the University of San Francisco won the No. 3, 4, 5, and 6 singles, to post a 4-2 win over the Gauchos on Saturday.
For much of the day, it didn't look like the match was going to be played. Rain fell on the Robertson Gymnasium Courts, but they were dried sufficiently to play and the Dons took advantage of the opportunity.
UCSB won at No. 1 singles with Marielle Gruenig posting a a 6-0, 6-0 whitewash of Camille Pamart. At No. 2 singles, it was Chelsea Glynn recording an easy 6-3, 6-3, won over Joana Laranjinha de Macedo. USF, however, won the rest of the singles matches for the win.
UCSB sophomore Charlotte Scatliffe dropped a 7-6, 6-3 match to Emma Taylor at No. 3, Jenny Sperry topped Leslie Damion at No. 4, 6-1, 6-3, Mylene Martin topped Mio Fukushima 6-3, 7-5 at No. 5, and Sarah Oudomvilay blasted Kristen Wilson, 6-0, 6-0.
UCSB played without its regular No. 3 player, Andrea Pintar, in the defeat.
"We were as flat as a pancake today," said head coach Pete Kirkwood. "It didn't seem possible that we would play with the amount of rain that fell. Unfortunately we did get the courts dry and we did play."
Kirkwood was a bit surprised that the Gauchos could not rise to the occasion, despite the bad weather.
"With as many matches as we have played, and all the inclement weather we have dealth with, this is the first time we have not had the toughness to get it (winning) done," Kirkwood said. "We will put this one behind us and prepare for Utah State on Thursday."
The Gauchos (10-6 overall, 4-1 in the Big West) will host the Aggies on Thursday, March 16, at 1:30 p.m. at the Robertson Gymnasium Courts.
