Northridge Calif - The UC Santa Barbara women's tennis team fought their way to a 4-3 victory over Cal State Northridge Saturday, in a Big West Conference match at the Matador Tennis Complex in Northridge.
The Gauchos (8-3 overall, 3-1 in the Big West) have won three consecutive conference matches after losing their opener to Cal Poly.
Santa Barbara found itself in a whole early in the contest after being soundly defeated in all three doubles matches, but they rallied back in singles winning four of six matches.
After the teams split matches at courts No.2 and No.3 Natalia Lozano pulled out a three set victory at No. 1 singles to even up the match at 2-2. The Gauchos dropped the next match at court No. 5 leaving it up to Jordan Dockendorf and Kiersten Meehan to finish off the day with wins in order for Santa Barbara to come away with the victory. Meehan was able to hold on and win 6-0,7-6 at No. 6. Dockendorf then came up big in her third set to pull out a 6-3,5-7,6-2 win at No. 4 that sealed the victory.
"On a day when we didn't have our best stuff we just hung in there and found a way," said head coach Peter Kirkwood.
The Gauchos next match is against Cal State Fullerton Sunday, March 13 at the Robertson Gymnasium Courts on campus beginning at 1 p.m.
