Gauchos Overcome Cal Poly, 4-3

Santa Barbara, Calif. - The UC Santa Barbara women's tennis team had the luck of the Irish this St. Patrick's Day; defeating conference rivals Cal Poly 4-3. The win included a sweep of the doubles matches. The Gauchos improve to 3-1 in the Big West and are now at an even 5-5 on the season.

The loss puts the Mustangs at 2-3 in the Big West and they are hoping to maintain their fourth place standing in the conference.

Marta Simic and Charlotte Scatliffe started out the day right when they defeated Steffi Wong and Brittany Blalock 8-7 (7-4) at No. 1. Things continued to go well for the Gauchos as Carina Bjornstrom and Asagi Onaga, playing at the No.2 position, finished off Maria Malec and Shannon Brady 8-5. Brittany Kausen and Tova Hausman completed the doubles sweep beating Diane Filip and Devin Peek 8-2.

The No. 1 singles player, Simic, took down Blalock 6-3, 6-4 to come up with two wins on the day. Playing at No. 2, Bjornstrom took an easy 6-2, 6-2 win off of Wong. Scatliff was also able to finish off her match in two sets, defeating Filip 6-3, 6-3 at the No. 3 spot. No. 4 Onaga had a very close match that ended in defeat by Brady 7-5 6-7 (10-8). Kausen and Bryanna Ojeda were also unable to come up victorious as Malec and Peek beat them, respectively.

The Gauchos will be back in action at the Robertson Gymnasium Courts Saturday, March 24 at 2:00 PM against Nevada. The Wolfpack is No. 56 in the FILA Collegiate Tennis Rankings, which matches their best ranking in school history.
