IRVINE, Calif. - The 69th-ranked UC Santa Barbara women's tennis team notched an important Big West Conference victory and its biggest upset of the 2006 season Friday, sneaking past No. 51 UC Irvine at the Anteater Tennis Stadium.
The Gauchos (13-7 overall, 6-1 in league play) won all three doubles matches to clinch the point, taking a 1-0 lead into singles action. Chelsea Glynn and Marielle Gruenig defeated freshmen Heidi Kaloi and Clare Fermin 9-8 in the closest doubles match at the No. 2 spot.
The Anteaters(10-9, 3-2) tied the match at 1-1 as Clare Fermin defeated Brittany Kausen 6-2, 6-3 in the No. 6 match. Andrea Pintar put UCSB back on top 2-1 with a 6-1, 6-0 win over sophomore Ashley Siddall in the No. 3 slot. Heidi Kaloi tied the match at 2-2 as she defeated Charlotte Scatliffe 7-6, 7-5 in No. 4 singles. Gruenig defeated sophomore Becky Bernhard 6-3, 6-2 in the No. 1 match giving the Gauchos a 3-2 lead. Sophomore Inna Agababian tied the match 3-3 as sshe topped Glynn 6-1, 6-7, 6-3 in No. 2 singles.
The match came down to No. 5 singles between freshman Ali Borowicz and Gaucho senior Leslie Damion. The two split the first two sets and battled in a close third set which Damion won in a tiebreaker to win the match 7-5, 3-6, 7-6(5).
The play their final two matches of the regular season at home, Thursday, April 13 vs. Saint Mary's and Saturday, April 15 against league foe Long Beach State.
