PULLMAN, Wash. - Seniors Amy Toth and Marjolein van de Ven collected victories in their final home match to lead No. 41 Washington State to a 6-1 victory over UC Santa Barbara (10-8, 3-2 Big West), Saturday afternoon at Hollingbery Fieldhouse.
The defeat drops UCSB to 1-2 on its current road trip to the Pacific Northwest.
Toth inched closer to becoming the only Cougar player in school history to post three consecutive 20 wins seasons after a 6-2, 6-1 victory over the Gauchos' Carina Bjornstrom. The final home victory earned Toth sole possession of fifth place on the all-time wins list and gave the Cougars a 2-0 lead in the match.
Van de Ven, earned her 24th victory of the season and increased the WSU lead to 3-0 with her 6-1, 6-2 win against Asagi Onaga in the No. 3 slot. Her 24 wins ties last year mark, which tied her fifth on the WSU single season victory list.
Junior Ekaterina Burduli secured the victory after her three-set win over Marta Simic, 3-6, 6-4, 6-1 in the No. 1 slot. Burduli dropped the first set 6-3, before storming back in the second set, 6-4. The Tel Aviv, Israel native went through the final set allowing only one game to Simic.
WSU would increase its margin of victory with wins in the No. 5 and 6 slots. Aleksandra Stefanova and Anastesia Opata both used straight-sets to ease past freshman Tova Hausman and sophomore Brittany Kausen respectively.
The Cougars attempt at a clean sweep fell short in the No. 4 slot as Santa Barbara's Charlotte Scattlife, playing singles for the first time in a couple of weeks, defeated Aleksandra Cekic in three sets, 6-4, 4-6, 6-4.
UCSB will complete its road trip on Sunday when it travels to Spokane, Wash., for a 10:00 a.m. match against Gonzaga.
