April 27, 2007

Indian Wells, Calif. - The UCSB women's tennis team's season ended Friday as it was defeated by Cal Poly in Big West Conference Championship quarterfinal action at Indian Wells Tennis Garden. The fifth-seeded Mustangs became the first lower-seeded team to pick up a win at this year's Championships as they topped the No. 4 Gauchos, 4-0.

UCSB fell to 10-11 in its final match of the year while Cal Poly improved to 8-11. The Mustangs will take on top-seeded UC Irvine in Saturday's semifinals.

Cal Poly gained the momentum by winning the crucial doubles point to take a 1-0 lead. At No. 3 doubles, Maria Malec and Diana Filip went to a tiebreaker to defeat UCSB's Tova Hausman and Brittany Kausen 9-8 (5). UCSB's Marta Simic and Charlotte Scatliffe won at No. 1 doubles and Cal Poly was victorious at No. 2 to set up the deciding battle at No. 3.

An injury to regular No. 2 player Carina Bjornstrom forced the Gauchos to move everyone up a position for singles play. Scatliffe, who filled in for Bjornstrom, dropped a 6-4, 6-1 decision to Steffi Wong.

Cal Poly also won matches at the No. 3 and No. 4 spots. At No. 3, Shannon Brady breezed to a 6-3, 6-1 win against Asagi Onaga. Filip posted a 6-2, 6-1 win over Hausman at No. 4.
