Gauchos Have Solid Debut at Cal State Fullerton Intercollegiates

Oct. 8, 2007

FULLERTON, Calif. - The UC Santa Barbara women's tennis team, playing with four newcomers, got its feet wet this past weekend as they opened their fall campaign down in Fullerton at the Cal State Fullerton Intercollegiates.

Freshman Jill Damion did not disappoint in her debut getting to the quarterfinals in singles and in doubles with sophomore partner Asagi Onaga. Damion fought hard in a three setter in the first round, and showed poise as she saved set points in the second set tiebreaker in the second round. In her third round match Damion overwhelmed Long Beach State's No. 2 Stephanie Bengson in straight sets 6-4, 6-2.

"Jill had an incredibly tough road to the quarters," said Gauchos head coach Pete Kirkwood. "She completely dominated No. 4 seed Stephanie Bengson of Long Beach State in the round of 16, Bengson plays No. 2 in the lineup for Long Beach which is ranked in the top 40 in the nation."

Another bright spot for the Gauchos was the play of sophomore Asagi Onaga and senior Brittany Kausen. Both players advanced to the semifinals of the consolation bracket.

The Gauchos were shorthanded during the tournament, as three of their starters did not make the trip south to Fullerton. Seniors Marta Simic and Charlotte Scatliffe were deactivated in order to rest nagging injuries. Sophomore Tova Hausman will sit out the entire fall campaign in order to be ready for the dual match season beginning in January.

UCSB returns to the court next week down in San Diego playing at the ITA West Regional at the Barnes tennis center all day from Oct. 18-21.
