SANTA BARBARA, Calif. - The UC Santa Barbara women's tennis team jumped into the ITA National Rankings this week at No. 57. The Gauchos had previously been unranked.
UCSB is off to a 5-1 start and, most recently, they swept previously nationally ranked Wyoming by a 7-0 score. Among Big West Conference schools, only Long Beach State is ranked higher than the Gauchos. The 49ers are No. 46.
"We are very excited with our ranking and feel it is justified," said head coach Pete Kirkwood. "We have put in a tremendous amount of hard work and have now been rewarded."
Kirkwood said that while the ranking is satisfying, it is just a start.
"Our goal is to stay in the national rankings, so we still have a lot of work ahead of us," he said. "Our next three matches will let us know where we stand."
Santa Barbara will host Blue-Green Rival Cal Poly at noon on Saturday, Feb. 26 at the Robertson Gymnasium Courts. On Sunday, the Gauchos travel to Malibu to take-on 41st-ranked Pepperdine and on Saturday, Mar. 5, they play at Long Beach State.
