Gauchos Host Long Beach State in Fight for Top Seed
April 2, 2010
Santa Barbara, Calif. - Just about a month ago, the UC Santa Barbara women's tennis team was struggling with a record of 4-8. Now, they have evened their record at 9-9, after winning five of their last six matches. They are 4-1 in conference play and are fighting for the No. 1 seed in the Big West Tournament.
One of the teams standing between the Gauchos and their No. 1 seed is Long Beach State, who will travel to UCSB for a critical match Saturday, April 3rd at 11:00 a.m. The 49ers (14-3, 6-0) are currently sitting atop the Big West with their 5-0 conference record, and are ranked 38th in the ITA national rankings.
For the Gauchos, Sofia Novak and Natalia Lozano have more in common than anchoring the top two spots in the lineup this season. The two have picked up their play of late, as they both have recorded victories in four of the last five matches, each winning the same four matches. It is no coincidence that the Gauchos have also won those same four matches.
Tova Hausman looks to add to her winning streak, as she goes for her eighth straight victory when the Gauchos battle the 49ers. She has done most of this damage from the No. 5 position in the lineup, but has also seen time at the No. 6 spot.
On the doubles front, the Gauchos shuffled their lineup recently, leading to improved play and positive results. UCSB has earned the doubles point in the first two matches with the new-look lineup, which features Hausman and Bryanna Ojeda in the top position, Lozano and Jordan Dockendorf at the No. 2 position, and Jill Damion and Annabel Gledden in the No. 3 spot. Damion has also been moving up the singles lineup after coming off of shoulder injury, and competed at the No. 3 position in her last match.
