IRVINE, Calif. - UC Santa Barbara junior Marta Simic and freshman Carina Bjornstrom and were named to the All-Big West Conference Second Team, while two Gaucho doubles teams also earned all-conference honors, it was announced Tuesday. Simic and Bjornstrom were standouts on a UCSB squad that finished 10-11 overall and 4-3 in the Big West in 2007 and lost in the quarterfinals of the Big West Tournament Championship.
After missing the first two matches of the season, Simic returned and posted a mark of 2-1 at No. 2 singles before moving up to No. 1 singles, where the Belgrade, Serbia native compiled a record of 6-8. Bjornstrom split time between No. 1 and No. 2 singles during her freshman campaign and finished with an overall record of 8-13.
UCSB's No. 1 doubles duo of Simic and junior Charolette Scatliffe earned Second Team All-Best honors, while Bjornstrom and fellow freshman Asagi Onaga earned honorable mention accolades for their performance at No. 2. Simic and Scatliffe recorded an 11-7 mark and Bjornstrom and Onaga went 9-7 in 2007.
This is the first All-Big West selection for both Simic and Bjornstrom, while both doubles pairs were also honored by the conference for the first time. Long Beach State's Hannah Grady was named the Big West Player of the Year, while Cal Poly's Brittany Blalock took home Freshman of the Year honors. The Big West Coach of the Year went to Mike Edles of UC Irvine.
