Gauchos continue to impress at Cal Poly Invite

Nov. 24, 2009

San Luis Obispo, Calif. - The UC Santa Barbara women's tennis team returned to the court this weekend as they faced their rival school at the Cal Poly Invitational. Several Gauchos again put up strong performances, as the team came away with the Flight Nos. 3 and 4 singles championships, as well the Flight No. 2 doubles title.

Annabel Gledden perhaps had the best weekend, as she captured both the Flight No. 3 singles championship, and teamed up with Natalia Lozano to win the Flight No. 2 doubles bracket. This is the second straight tournament in which Gledden found doubles success, as she made it to the semi-finals of the Flight B bracket with Lozano at the Cal State Northridge Invitational.

Also continuing her strong play was senior Bryanna Ojeda. She took down Cal Poly freshman Ashley Pane to claim the Flight No. 4 singles championship in another promising showing. She also beat Loyola Marymount's Maria Garcia-Planas without giving up a single game.

While Lozano left Cal Poly with the Flight No. 2 doubles crown, she came up just shy of defeating Cal Poly's Brittany Blalock in the Flight No. 1 singles championship. Blalock is the nation's 67th ranked singles player.

Asagi Onaga had a productive weekend, as she brought down Cal Poly's Steffi Wong on Sunday, after a victory on Friday over Loyola Marymount's Jane Pringle. On Saturday, she took the first set from San Francisco's Cecilia Gratian, before falling 5-7, 6-4, 6-2.

The doubles team of Erica Cano and Alexandra McIntosh recorded a pair of victories over the weekend, in Flight No. 3 doubles.
