CHULA VISTA, Calif. - UC Santa Barbara All-American Barbara Nwaba finished eighth out of 14 competitors at the 19th Jim Thorpe Cup, a competition for American and German heptathletes and decathletes held annually. The 2011 competition was held at the Olympic Training Center in Chula Vista, Calif., and ended Sunday evening.
Nwaba scored 5,545 at the competition. Her best finish among the seven events was a first-place in the javelin as she recorded a throw of 152' 10". She also had a second-place in the high jump with a leap of 5' 11.25" and a third place in the 200 meters in a time of 24.83.
Bette Wade of the United States won the event with a total of 6,052 points while Germany's Claudia Rath was second at 5,858. Nwaba actually posted better marks than Wade in four of the seven events.
A 2011 All-American in the indoor pentathlon, Nwaba redshirted the 2011 outdoor season at UCSB. She will return for her senior year with the Gauchos in 2012.
