FRESNO, Calif. – The UC Santa Barbara women's track and field team kicked off their 2012 Indoor season this weekend at the Run for the Dream meet on Friday, Jan. 20. The Save Mart center hosted several top ranked University, Open, and Elite athletes from all over the nation. The Gaucho men do not compete in the indoor season.

Fifth-year Senior Maureen Ajoku completed her final outdoor season as a Gaucho last spring but has donned the Gaucho singlet to represent UCSB one last time in her last indoor season of eligibility. Ajoku's 2011 outdoor season was a success, leaving the program tying the all-time record in the long jump at 19-4.75 that Katie Kramer first set in 2007. Ajoku competed in both the long jump and the 55 meter hurdles, placing second overall in the University division with her mark of 18-3 behind Phylicia Johnson of Long Beach State who reached 18-8. Veronica Gines finished fifth overall with her jump of 17-9. Ajoku finished 15th in the hurdles event, clocking in a time of 8.80 while Cherise Dixon finished in 8.99.

Irene Kujore has also graced the Gauchos with her return for her final indoor season of competition. Her best mark in the shot put measured 49-7 which she accomplished during the 2010 season. Kujore finished in third place in the shot put where her best heave measured 45-7.75. Fellow teammate Alex Francis followed right behind with her best mark measuring 43-7. Kujore and Francis also competed in the weight throw competition with Kujore's best mark measuring 59.5.75 and earning her third place while Francis threw 51-5 for a fifth place finish out of 22 competitors.

Tayler Williams competed in the triple jump where she cleared 36-2.75. Williams' all-time best was 41-2.25 which she set during the 2010 season, making her the second farthest triple jumper in Gaucho history. In the 55-meter dash, Kelsey Bolden clocked in 7.39 while Megan Vyenielo ran 7.72 placing 14th and 31st, respectively.

The women's 4x400m relay team finished fifth overall with a time of 4:05.57, consisting of runners Cherise Dixon, Lauren Kodama, Cherelle McMillon, and Amanda Rodriguez. Helena Montin competed in the high jump where she placed eighth overall, her highest clearance at 5-2.25.

Next up, the women's indoor track team will head to the Seattle for the University of Washington Indoor Invite (Jan. 27-28).
